Qu completed her undergraduate study with a B.Eng. in Materials Science and Engineering from Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (BUAA), Beijing. Core modules include processing, structures and characterisations of metals, ceramics, polymers and composite materials; chemistry (organic and inorganic), physics, and mathematics. She participated in the Loughborough-China Materials Partnership (LCMP) programme after the completion of the 3rd year study. Her final year project thesis titled ‘Identification and Characterization of Compostable Packaging’, was completed in Loughborough University, UK, under supervision of Dr. Noreen Thomas.

Qu finished her M.Sc. degree in Polymer Science and Technology in Loughborough University with 1st class honour. Her master dissertation focused on synthesis of ceramic/polymer nanocomposites for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), supervised by Dr. Xunjin Bao.

In her Ph.D. studies, Qu has gained experience and developed skills in structural study of 2D materials including graphene, MoS2, WS2 and h-BN with single atom sensitivity, under the supervision of Professor Jamie H. Warner. Her research interest also includes growing 2D materials by chemical vapour deposition (CVD) process and investigating the growth mechanism.
